"THE AMBASSADOR OF TEXAS MUSIC"
Now available from
Lucas Associated Artists...
Gary P. Nunn began his musical career as a 7th grader in a garage band in Brownfield, Texas, where he was an honor student and all-around athlete. He attended Texas Tech University and South Plains College while pursuing his music on weekends playing with “The Fabulous Sparkles”, a take-no prisoners rock band that was the rage of West Texas during the sixties.
In 1968 he transferred to the University of Texas at Austin immersing himself in the lively local music scene, and after a stint with a couple of local rock groups, eventually joined Austin’s premier band at that time, “The Lavender Hill Express”. Managed by Michael Lucas (now of Lucas Artist Management), the “Express” included Rusty Wier, Layton DePenning, and Leonard Arnold, all of whom later moved on to establish themselves as major players and entertainers in the craze soon to be known as “Texas Progressive”, “Outlaw Country”, among other monikers.
A lot has happened since those early, formulative years, most of it good for fans of Gary P. Nunn. Leading the Lost Gonzo Band for four years through the late 70’s
as they backed such notables as Jerry Jeff Walker and Willie Nelson on stage and in the studio, he earned his chops in every aspect of the music business. In 1980, that band broke up and Gary P. Nunn found himself on his own and in the position of having to start over, never having performed under his own name. Since the disbanding of Gonzo, he’s grown into one of the best known and most popular artists on the Texas music scene, a testament to his talent and determination. As recently as 2007, Gary P. Nunn received “The Ambassador of Texas Music” title from Governor Rick Perry in a special awards presentation in Austin, TX.
